"First band on was the totally terrific trio Talking To Teapots. They are Swedish last we checked, but entered the stage saying "Hello, we are from Poland". MAD hatters alright. But not as mad as their special brand of music. Some sort of mix between The Beatles and The Residents. Reminiscent of the Copenhagen band TWANG you could say.

Talking To Teapots was the perfect band to kick off the whole thing, and they did a remarkable job before packing their stuff and going right to the Emmaboda Festival where they were to play later the same day."

Welcome to the wondrous world of The Cuties. A band that gives its debut album the intriguing title "Ah-Ah-Aah", selects a new bass player by the colour of her hair and sells home-made bracelets as merchandise.

Maaike (vocals, keys) and Wendy (guitar, vocals) once again were hanging around their friends' rehearsal room, being utterly bored. All afternoon, there had been a boy who had clumsily tried to impress them. The girls were tired of him and waiting, and decided to use this negative experience to write their first song, "Ugly Boy". An almost-of-age drummer was available (Alicia), and after having found a blond bass player (Anne) , the band was completed (and balanced, hair-wise). The girls wrote a handful of songs, and placed some of them on Myspace in the course of 2006.

The songs were hailed. Powerful melodies combined with disarming lyrics, played without pretence. To their own surprise, the wheel was set in motion. They played at LLink on Radio 5, appeared onstage at Crossing Border and played as opening act for local heroes Mono in a sold-out Rotown. The Cuties became talk of the town in Rotterdam and signed a record deal with the small but renowned indie label Living Room Records.

In the following period a lot of performances were given (including a tour with the Ian Fays from the USA), the band appeared on a mp-3voor12 compilation, and instants hits were written about underpaid Saturday jobs, sleepover parties and the ice cream man around the corner. Corno Zwetsloot recorded the whole shebang, which resulted in their debut album, Ah-Ah-Aah.

The title refers to a characteristic Cuties-harmony, of which many can be found on the album. Ah-Ah-Aah resembles a little lamb: cheerful and summery. But above all it is very girly. Never complicated or predictable, bearing resemblance to All Girl Summer Fun Band, Jonathan Richman and, according to some, the Shins. Spring of 2008 starts sooner than ever.
